from Slim's: "The first thing that strikes you when listening to a Bhi Bhiman song is his voice—a vibrant, piercing tenor that's as rich with vibrato as it is with heartfelt emotional heft. It's a voice that's instantly iconic, recalling, at once, the power of Barrington Levy and the warmth of Bill Withers. But when Bhiman actually sings, those comparisons instantly melt away. There is really no other artist in the world whose voice sounds quite like his. It's a voice that has its roots in Sri Lanka, where Bhiman draws his heritage, branches across the globe, drawing influence from the Midwestern folk of Bob Dylan, past the Jamaican reggae of Bob Marley, through the urban soul of Motown in its heyday, and finally settling in San Francisco, where Bhiman writes his songs.

His voice would just be a gimmick if the songs weren't there to back it up, but they are in a big way. The songs are richly observed slices of emotional life. While Bhiman's songs don't necessarily sound very much like Randy Newman's, Newman may be Bhiman's closest songwriting contemporary. They share a paradoxical understanding that what makes a song universal is its specificity—richly observed and faithfully reported songs can be unpeeled like an onion, outlasting songs full of hollow histrionics every time. "Doug Ellington (Duke's great grandson) opens up, The Moondoggies from Seattle who were just in Rolling Stone Mag and are awesome rock/country are next, then Foxes, and finally Bhi Bhiman headlines with a very interesting folk/rock thing going on, so come out, it's going to be a pretty cool night of sounds."
