"Watch out, Jay Reatard -- this bay area one-man-band has even scuzzier static in his garage." - SPIN, January 2009

Though Ty Segall has been involved with a few different bands in his hometown of San Francisco, his self-titled debut for John Dwyer's (of Thee Oh Sees fame) Castle Face label is the first taste I've had of his insanely energetic brand of garage rock. And that's most likely a good thing, too, as his one-man show allows the dude's prodigious talents to shine pretty brightly and without any interference. Owing as much to folks like Hasil Adkins as he does to contemporaries like Thee Oh Sees, Segall blasts through his debut, soaking his bouncing tracks in sheets of reverb, strangling his guitar as he soulfully shouts and stomps out the beat. Rocketing by with only the barest of essentials present (guitar, voice, bass drum, tambourine), tracks like "Pretty Baby (You're So Ugly)" and "Oh Mary" don't mince words or sounds, opening up roars that are every bit as propulsive as they are ferocious. Totally lo-fi and yet still doing complete justice to these twelve tunes, Ty Segall's debut makes a great case for him being one to look out for in this coming year.
