Wattstax (1973) (98 min.)
Dir. Mel Stuart

Admission is free. Doors open early.

Billed as the “Black Woodstock”, the Wattstax concert was mounted at the LA Coliseum in the summer of 1972 to commemorate the 7th anniversary of the Watts riots. The documentary’s exploration into the Watts neighborhood, as well as the thoughts and expressions of the African-American community (and celebrity), are what secures this film as an important cultural time capsule.
Featuring: Richard Pryor, Jesse Jackson, Kim Weston, The Barkays, Rufus Thomas, The Staple Singers and headliner Isaac Hayes.

The magazine Wax Poetics is sponsoring the event, with a giveaway of issues 10 & 11 (Wattstax issues) to a couple of lucky folks in attendance. Stax/Volt vinyl will be spinned before and after, as well.

The isaac hayes album for this is great. Definitly worth a listen.
